Drivers Could Be Placed Out of Service If They Don’t Speak English
Starting June 25, 2025, a new regulation will directly impact truck drivers operating within the United States. Authorities will be able to place any driver out of service if they fail to demonstrate adequate English proficiency during an inspection.
What Does This Measure Involve?
According to an updated policy by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration), all officers conducting roadside inspections must begin the procedure speaking in English. If they suspect that the driver does not understand or cannot respond appropriately, they may initiate a two-step evaluation.
Failing this evaluation can result in a fine, and if the driver fails both steps, they may be prohibited from continuing to operate until they meet the language requirements.
What Is Considered Adequate English Proficiency?
Drivers must be able to:
- Hold a simple conversation with the inspecting officer.
- Understand road signs and written instructions.
- Follow verbal directions during the inspection.
- Complete reports or forms required by authorities.

Although this requirement has long been part of federal regulations, its enforcement will now be more rigorous. The measure follows federal guidelines aimed at improving road safety and ensuring that drivers can communicate effectively with officers in critical situations.
